Discussions of various fantasy-fiction authors:
#7- R.A. Salvatore
One of the first
series I read from TSR's impressive array of fantasy fiction was The Icewind
Dale Trilogy, by R.A. Salvatore. My enthusiasm for the genre was
replenished by Salvatore's refreshingly original characters and a very
efficiently-written storyline.
While Savatore's
Cleric Quintet didn't have the same quality of a storyline, his ten Drizzt
novels, of which I have read the latest seven, are all excellent.
Salvatore also has several
series with other publishers, but I haven't gotten around to reading them,
yet. I'm almost hesitant to see if he could write anything better
than what I have already read!
R.A. Salvatore is somewhat of an anomaly in my top ten in that he isn't at least 50 years old. I am impressed, although not surprised, that someone in their 30's could have the experience and the patience to craft novels with such a good sense of timing and scope in terms of the complete novel. Sometimes, while reading a novel, you can tell that the author wasn't thinking too much about what she had told you a few hundred pages earlier. I think it is a sign of an excellent mind at work, feeding you a good story if s/he has that sixth sense for what the *reader* knows at any given point in the story, and writes accordingly. This is one of R.A. Salvatore's greatest strengths, and when combined with quirky and original characters, make for the best stuff TSR- or any publisher, for that matter- has to offer.
