History

I have a certain interest in history and this has soaked into a desire to look into church history. Most of the stuff here came from the net and the encyclopaedia Brittanica. There are a few of my own notes from where I have tried to fathom out and make sense of the information. This subject has the happy result of providing a high word count that can be used top fill up our Church Journal.

St. James is named after St. James the Apostle not the other St. James who lived a little later and was an important leader of the early Christian Church. Both James were martyred, which appears to have been an occupational hazard at the time. There is not a lot of hard information available on either but here is what I have gathered on our St. James.

St. James is linked with Santiago de la Compostella in north west Spain. I have put together a short article on Santiago.

We all recite the Nicene Creed nearly every Sunday. I am not sure why it is skipped some weeks. Still I looked into this and was surprised how tenuous was its links with the 1st council of Nicea and the good old Emperor Constantine. Not to be deterred I made some notes on the council anyway. There are also some handy words on heresy; always a good subject of debate. Lets hear it for Nicea.

I have made some notes on the Synod of Whitby based on Bede and Oman's History of England before the Norman Conquest.

The Christian year begins with Advent. The history of this season is described here.

A biography of our 1st Vicar of the independent parish George Sowden. Before his time the Church was a curacy.

Hard to find a place for this. The Reredos is a carved thing we have behind the altar. This page hosted by   Get your own Free Home Page
