"These are some books that can change your life. Or, at least your perspective, if you aren't big on change."

v = vegan, lo = uses dairy and eggs, nv = non-vegetarian or contains some nv recipes

These are books that I reccomend that seem to deal with food in one way or another. I wonder why? Maybe because food is yummy for my tummy. Hmm... that must be it. In that case, here are some yummy for your tummy books:

Reclaiming Our Health - John Robbins (199?)
This third book from John includes such subjects as: dethroning the medical establishment, bringing women's health back into light, and showing you that health is in yours to take responsibility for, among other topics. I learned a lot of new things from this book and I think it should be essential reading for everyone, especially women.

(v) May All Be Fed - John Robbins (1992)
This, his second book is half recipes and the other half contains information that should be common knowledge, but it's not. Some people have told me that this book changed their life. Well, if this will change your life, his other books will change your world: Diet For a New America, Reclaiming Our Health.
Here are a couple EarthSave Websites. EarthSave has been recognised for their knowledgable site a number of times. It is an organization that John Robbins and Dr. Michael Klaper started in response to the overwhelming response to John's book Diet For A New America. So many people were writing with questions and wanting to know how they could do more. Well, Michael Klaper was so taken by this book that he read, that he went to meet John wanting to become involved in he effort somehow. As I recall, that's how the story goes. They started EarthSave: a non-profit educational organization dedicated to educating the public about the effects of food choices on the environment, personal health, and animal compassion.

Diet For A New America - John Robbins (1989)
This book changed many peoples lives, including his own. He is the son of the famous Baskin Robin's (31 flavours) ice cream parlors owner. Read it. It'll blow your mind. If it doesn't, then you don't have much of a mind to blow.

There's a similar, more up to date, book due to come out in the fall of 1999 with a Canadian perspective.
It's called:

Canada's Guide For The New Millennium by Joseph Pace.
This I have got to read when it comes out. You should too.

(lo) The Complete Book Of Vegetarian Cooking - edited by Veronica Sperling & Christine McFadden (1996)
Compiled information from other books. Big, colourful, and full of full-page photos on every second page.

(v) The American Vegetarian Cookbook From The Fit For Life Kitchen - Marlyne Diamond (1990)
This is the book you want to start with. It has everything and is written by someone who obviously knows how to keep things simple and hearty enough to feed a family. There's lots of tips and a very good index that includes a really good vitamin list and alternative ingredient list. It's big and expensive, but you'll use it a lot. I have put tab indexes on mine since I refer to it so much.

The Harrowsmith Sourcebook - Canada's National Compendium of Alternative Tools, Goods, and Services. (1979)
Compiled from the Harrowsmith Country Life Magazine I believe. I have an old copy, I wonder if they still make new editions, and it's really great to look through. There's a myriad of references in this thing. It's amazing. I'm going to check to see if there's new ones, because this book is the best for the "alternative lifestyle", just packed full of stuff.

(v) Vegan Handbook - (1996)
Lots of recipes plus lots of other info. on being vegan including and shoppers guide to leather alternatives and on line (internet) resources. A good information resource for people starting a vegan lifestyle.

(lo) Moosewood Cookbook - Mollie Katzen (1977, 1992)
This author's book was spurred by so many people requesting recipes to her dishes at her Moosewood Restaurant. Packed with recipes, she hand wrote and drew the whole book. About half of it is vegan. Most that isn't vegan can be easily altered. She has a handful of other books now too.

(v) A Vegetarian Ecstasy - James Levin, M.D. and Natalie Cederquist (1990)
All recipes and a good layout.

(v) A Celebration of Wellness - same as above (1992)
Even more recipes and an even better layout.

(v) Fresh from a Vegetarian Kitchen - Meredith McCarthy (1989, 1990)
Full of recipes of all kinds.

(lo) Arrowhead Mills Cookbook - Vickie Rae Chelf (1993)
All recipe book. Take out the eggs and it's a fully vegan book.

(lo) The Book of Tofu /Miso /Tempeh/ Kudzu - William Shurtleff & Akiko Aoyagi (1975/'76/'79/'85)
All of these books are great. Their specialty is soy based foods. They see soy as the most versatile food in the world and after reading their books, you'll believe it. These books are just the tip of the iceberg it seems. William has written a myriad of other professional books and essays and such things on all different aspects of soy foods and some other topics. "www.amazon.com" has a fairly good listing if you want to take a look. It's much cheaper to order directly from their "The Soyfoods Center" P.O. BOX 234 Lafayette, CA 94549 USA. They can send you a brochure with a list of publications and prices. They also have a computer resource with something like 3000 years of information on soy. Need info. for a University thesis or something- then this is your one-stop place.

(v) Tofu Cookery - Louise Hagler (1982, 1991)
Looking for easy and tasty, this is it. Each recipe only has a handful of ingredients and most only have a couple lines for directions. I often make the pumpkin pie but skip the crust and add her whip topping on to it. Yummy!

(lo) Vegetarian Cooking from Australian Woman's Weekly (1990)
Very easy to find. Full of photos and a reasonable price, that's why it's a hit.

(nv) Chinese Cooking Class Cookbook from Australian Woman's Weekly (?)
Glossy photos; glossy food. Sure looks good though.

(v) Recipes for Longer Life - Anne Wigmore (1978)
Recently she died in a car accident. Too bad. There're web pages about her and her work. This book is as easy as Tofu Cookery but much much healthier. Non-cook book. Everyone should eat this way.

(v) Vegan Nutrition: Pure and Simple - Michael Klaper, M.D. (1987)
Well known for starting EarthSave along with John Robbins. Good simple book that makes being vegan a snap. The Phoenix family is featured in this and another of his books: Pregnancy, Children, and the Vegan Diet. River Phoenix being the famous actor. He's got a video companion to this book (it's really good) and audio tapes too. Maybe more than one video. His lectures are very good too. He lived and worked in Vancouver for a time.

(v) Macrobiotic Pregnancy and Care of a the Newborn - Michio & Aveline Kushi (1983, 1984, 1985)
Very interesting, educational, and informative where other books on the same subject aren't.

(v) The Heart of Zen Cuisine - Soei Yoneda (1984, 1985)
Traditional Japanese recipes of the Buddhist kind. Was a gift from beloved Kayori.

(nv) Quick and Easy Japanese Cuisine For Everyone - Yukiko Moriyama (1985, 1987)
Oh, I miss the food in Japan! This was a gift from Yuka, back in 1988 I guess.

(nv) The Umberto Menghi Cookbook - (Canada, Vancouver, 1982)
He's been called the "restaurant king of Vancouver," "Vancouver's outstanding restaurateur," and the man whose restaurants have "transformed Vancouver into a restaurant town of exquisite style and variety."

(lo) Classic Vegetarian - Sarah Brown (1996)
Another recipe book full of photos.

(lo) Vegetarian Four Seasons - Rose Elliot (1993)
Another one full of photos.

(lo) Linda McCartney's Home Cooking - (1990)
Full of photos too.

(nv) Feasting On Raw Foods - edited by Charles Gerras (1980)
Lots of vegan recipes. This is the way to go folks!

(lo) No-Cook Book - John H. Tobes (Canada 1969, ..., 1978)
Trying to find this one must be hard. It's a non-indexed dictionary sized book that is packed full of different meals and recipes for each day of the year from Jan. 1st to Dec. 31st. Quite amazing. I've never seen this book before I picked it up in an out of town used-book store in Las Vegas (along with the above book). Good find! Each page has a quote at the bottom too! You never see books like this around. I'd like to find and read his other books.

Diet and Nutrition - A Holistic Approach - Ruldoph Ballentime, M.D. (1978)
You can learn a lot from this book. Enough said.

(v) Friendly Foods - Gourmet Vegetarian Cuisine - Ron Pickarski, CEC (1991)
This guy knows his cooking. He's the first vegetarian chef to be certified as an Executive Chef by the American Culinary Federation. His specialty is gourmet cuisine prepared with plant-based foods (vegan). He has won 2 bronze, 3 silver, and one gold medals in the International Culinary Olympics over the years, being the first to win with fully vegan dishes. He's got other book(s) that I don't have yet:

(v) Eco-Cuisine: An Ecological Approach To Gourmet Vegetarian Cooking (1995). Plus he's got a cooking video too. See Eco-Cuisine, Inc. Home-page

Another vegan chef to check out is Chef Albert H. Chase at The Institute For Culinary Awakening homepage. I saw him on TV in May on 'KCTS9 Seattle Goes Vegetarian'-or whatever it was called. He's a nice guy, as Ron is too.

Know of any other vegan chefs? Tell me by e-mail and I'll add them too.

(v) The Sprouting Book &, The Wheatgrass Book - Anne Wigmore (1986/1985)
All you need to know on the subjects of these most healthy of the healthy foods.

(v) The Quick and Natural Macrobiotic Cookbook - Aveline Kushi and Wendy Esko (1989)
Half recipes, half information. Lots of Japanese recipes as expected.

(v) That Naturally healthy Gourmet - Margaret Lawson (1994)

Blatant Raw Foodist Propaganda - Joe Alexander (1990)
All about raw foods.

Acid & Alkaline - Herman Aihara (1986)
All about acid and alkaline foods.

(v) Living the Good Life The Better Way - John & Ruth Lausevic (1993)
Great cook book! Easy and simple and good for ya.

Reference book on all kinds of food vitamins and minerals, and what they are good for.

Compiled recipes. Hand bound and copied gift from Students Acting for Global Awareness after I spoke at their school, Maple Ridge Secondary, on behalf of EarthSave. I had a good time.

(lo) The Gluten Book - Le Arta Moulton
Yup- all about making gluten (fake meats).

(lo) The art of just cooking - Lima Otsawa (1974)
This must be a tough find too. Good good healthy Japanese food the macrobiotic way. A small section on fish dishes.

(lo) Vegetarian Cooking - Carole Handslip (1985)
What a last name, eh? Small but nice book with lots of photos. All these photo books look so goooood.

(v) The Un Cook Book - Elisabeth & Dr. Elton Baker (1980, 1989)
A very good raw food book. Everyone should eat more of these foods.

(v)Mock Java - Joe Ritter (Canadian, Surrey, BC, 1977)
Simulated coffee from natural ingredients. Haven't tried it yet, but looks interesting.

(v) Vegan Delights - Jeanne Marie Martian (Canada, Vancouver, 1993)
"Gourmet Vegetarian Specialties" Yup, some of the most creative recipes I've seen. Definitely a must have. She also teaches cooking and stuff out of Vancouver. She has other books I want too:

For the Love of Food - Jeanne Marie Martin
All Natural Cookbook - Jeanne Marie Martin
Hearty Soups & Stews - Jeanne Marie Martin

(lo) The little Book of Vegetarian Recipes - (1993)
Nice picture book. A gift from Shinji, the seemingly slow minded home-stay guy we had.

Using this book and another- a man I met, his mother, rid him of brain and body cancer that doctors said would kill him in six months.

A Hare Krishna book with recipes, and stuff they believe in. The Hare Krishna art is just great to look at by the way- not just referring to this book.

(lo) Recipes for a Small Planet - Ellen Buchman Ewald (1973)
"This book is intimately and entirely related to the discoveries revealed in another book, Diet for a Small Planet by Frances Moore Lapp$Bq(J" I gave that "Lapp$Bq(J book to Kayori since she liked it so much.
