AN ANARCHIST'S DREAM -
synopsis
Two young men share a one bedroom
apartment: Victor, a man of action, who uses the bedroom and Gabriel, a man of
many words who must settle for the sofa. Living together has become so painful
for the two of them that Victor demands that Gabriel move out for failing to
pull his own weight. Victor has reached the breaking point and he's tired of
taking care of Gabriel. Victor can't
pay rent and Gabriel is too perplexed by his dreams to be very effectual at
all.
A
young woman -- Christina --, who apparently belongs nowhere, arrives, in
response to an ad place by one of the roommates; and she intends to make a new
life for herself there. She is drawn to Victor in an unspoken, animalistic way,
while she flirts with Gabriel, who rejects her advances. She probes into Victor
and Gabriel's relationship but Gabriel dances around the subject. Victor
grumbles at Gabriel's presence and threatens to hurt Gabriel unless he leaves.
Gabriel does leave but merely spends the
night outside in Victor's car, while Christina and Victor spend an uneventful
night together in the bedroom. Christina has taken the time to clean the place
up, thereby placing her unmistakable signature on it, insisting that everything
is going to work for a change. Victor acquiesces, and he's content to have
someone helping him out for a change. But Gabriel lingers and returns to
confront Victor, at which time startling revelations are made about their relationship and Christina
concludes that the situation is beyond her ability to remedy. She decides to
leave.
Victor cannot persuade her to stay, and,
in his frustration with the turn of events, follows through with his threats
and beats the tar out of Gabriel. Victor gets only the satisfaction of venting
his rage, but he's unable to eliminate Gabriel's destructive influence. Like it
or not, the two are almost fated to live together and torment each other. Any hope that things would change for the
better departed along with Christina.
