I'm sitting here, Monday April 27th, 1998, crying. I just watched the news. A little 6 year old boy was killed on his birthday when he and a 4 year old friend found a gun in the house and played with it.
Stand back, I'm getting on my soapbox again!
Why can't people who have guns and children in the same house learn to keep the firearms locked up? My dad was a member of the NRA so I do know how to fire a gun. I choose not to, nor do I have any in the house. But be assured that IF I did they would be locked up regardless of if my kids knew enough to stay away from them.
I'm 36 years old and my Dad STILL keeps the gun cabinet locked when I am home. Why? Not because I'm in the house. I know enough to understand that if I am going to touch a gun to check and see if it's loaded or not. And he doesn't keep a loaded one in the house. He knows his responsibility as a parent and as a human being. He locks them up to keep them away from my kids and anyone who would break into the house. Yes my kids know enough not to touch one, if there is an adult around, but kids together have such a strong inborn curiousity that sometimes knowing the rules is not enough to keep them safe.
That is OUR job!!!!!!!!!!!! I know that we can't be around all the time, that kids will end up alone sometimes, in another room, the yard or someplace. So it falls to YOU as the adult to prevent anything from happening. LOCK UP YOUR GUNS!!!!!!!!
Don't you value the lives of your children over your own? I know I do. Yes my life is important, but the small fragile lives that I was given the honor and duty to care for are more precious to me than anything. I'm not a model parent, I yell and sometimes scream at the top of my lungs. And yes I admit it, I have one horrid temper. I've gotten so mad at my kids that I've had to walk away from them. But at least I know enough to walk away for THEIR safety!
I know our world is not easy to live in, it strips away to much of our innocence and forces us to grow up to fast. But if we, as parents, take a bit more time and thought with ourselves and our kids.......
Thank you for letting me rant and rave. The tears are gone now. And yes I understand that it isn't guns that kill people.. people do. If you let a gun just lay there, it won't kill anyone, but let it come in contact with a human being. The situation changes, drastically. With education, forethought and prevention we can keep our kids safer in this harsh world. Do you love your children enough to keep them safe?
It has been more than a year since I wrote this but all of the sentiment in it is still here. Take care of your kids. They are our future!!!
Sorry, that was one more blast of the soapbox. I hope I didn't offend anyone but if I did... maybe you needed to be offended. If you are offended your eyes are open at least. Remember, you matter to me, your lives and your thoughts are important and have infinite value! Bright Blessings, my friends.
