Earth is the realization of the work we have done. It is the outcome or results of our endeavors. It is the element of stability and of the body. It is wisdom, strength, growth and prosperity. It is the physical earth and the very heart of life. It is essential in spells and rituals of prosperity, business, fertility and stability. It is a feminine element and governs stone and knot magick. It is a receptive energy. North, the place of great darkness is associated with Earth and its season is Winter, the time of darkness. It is represented in a tarot deck by the penacle and the magickal tool is also the Pentacle. Its astrological signs are Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn.

Earth faeries are called gnomes (Greek gnoma meaning knowledge). They prefer the forests and can be seen in the mossy roots of an oak tree. These beings work and maintain the physical structure of the earth and are great craftsman. They are the guardians of sacred grounds, locations and monuments. They have a weakness for gem stones and things that glitter. They have tremendous power over rocks and flora. Gnomes are distant kin to dwarves. They live to be around 600. They are carefree and lively, also peaceful and helpful. They are the souls of generosity and sharing but greed and betrayal will cause a gnome to become alienated and malicious.

They are born with many talents and extraordinary senses we can only dream about, such as, weather forecasting, sense of direction and time, telepathy, and extended uses of all the senses. They can communicate with all animals and often protect them. They are portrayed as short stocky creatures wearing red (male) and green (female) hats. They are said to be the protector of plants and animals so society has made little statues of them called Garden Gnomes to be placed on lawns.

Earth is one of the static and stable elements; or at least it is very slow to change compared to the other three. Stability in mood and personality is a sign of a 'grounded' person. Earth is also associated with material goods and wealth. Gnomes, the elementals of earth, are said to be somewhat bad tempered, but slow to anger. However, when a gnome does become angry, they are very difficult to placate! Earth energy is considered to be feminine energy; and the only element, to the best of my knowledge, that is often seen as a diety within Itself -- Gaia.

The Element of Earth rules the northern quarter. Ghom, also called Ghob is its ruler and oversees the gnomes and dwarfs and the little ones of the moonbeams. Its color is dark green; it is cold and dry. Earth is a female energy. Positive associations are: winter, midnight, the pentacle, ritual salts, gemstones, mountains, caves, soil, respect, endurance, responsibility, stability, thoroughness, and purpose in life. The negative associations are: rigidity, unwillingness to change or see another side to a problem, stubbornness, lack of conscience, vacillation, earthquakes and slides. These are the beliefs of the Celts.
