Logan stopped his pacing when his sensitive ears
picked up the sound of a doorknob turning at the
opposite end of the hall. Before the man had time to
completely exit the room he was there, " Blue?"
Dr. Henry McCoy was startled at first, but quickly
re-composed himself, " Logan." He didn't know whether
to attack the man or cry for him.
"Is he gonna be all right?" Logan's voice shook as he
asked. Did he have the right to know anymore? Had he
thrown that away? God what a mess!
" Storm is staying with him. There is nothing more
that I can do. It was a cruel shot to the heart Logan,
those are often tricky. "
Logan ran his hands through his thick black hair, then
scrubbed his face " Christ..."
Hank noticed that his hands and voice were shaking,
but refused to play the game this time. Sometimes a
person has to face facts. " Go to your own room Logan,
there is nothing more that you can do here." He saw a
flash of the broken boy inside the room and added
cruelly,
" I would have to say that you've done quite enough!
This was your own fault. How could you be so
insensitive?"
Logan was shocked for a moment to see the usually
serene Beast show the darker side of his mutation.
Still, he had no answer for the man. How could he?
Henry knew he sounded gruff and probably looked it
too, but that was the least that Logan deserved. " I'm
going to check my OTHER patient, please excuse me."
Logan stared at the closed door of his... their... no,
it was Remy's room again now. He leaned in, rested his
forehead against it and whispered brokenly, " I'm so
sorry darlin'."
*****
Inside the darkened room Storm sat humming an ancient
tune as she brushed through dark silky hair. Her
brother was still shaking, even after she and Henry
piled every blanket in the room on him. The shivers
weren't from being cold though... it was shock.
Shock and fear and pain and betrayal fueled the
tremors that tormented her brother. She bent and
kissed his ear then whispered, " I am here Remy.
Please come to me brother, please come back to me?"
There was no way to tell if he even realized she was
in the room. He stared straight ahead at the wall, his
eyes looking dead. If he didn't respond soon there
would be Hell to pay.
" Goddess, he does not deserve such treatment!" She
took a deep breath and tried to clear her mind of the
picture of Logan fried to a crisp by a bolt from the
sky. Pulling her legs up she curled herself around her
brother, maybe the presence of a warm body would bring
him around.
*****
Logan made his way slowly to the kitchen. He needed a
beer or maybe a dozen. He needed to smoke and drink
and think. That was something he had avoided up until
now... thinking. He knew when he did he would have to
admit that it was he who pulled the proverbial
trigger. Sent his lover and his friend into a downward
spiral that they might not be able to escape. It was
all so stupid! It could have been so easily avoided,
but he missed his lover badly, listened to the beast
inside him, and the consequences were devastating.
" How's Gambit," it was Scott asking, and a bad
situation suddenly became ten times worse.
Logan glared at the man for a second before he opened
the first bottle in the case and swallowed the entire
contents in one go. " Not good, but shouldn't you be
asking about your WIFE?"
Scott walked up and reached out, but stopped before
touching the Canadian, " Logan, I'm sor-"
Logan turned so fast that Scott nearly fell over the
chair behind him. His claws were out and he trembled
from the restraint it took not to skewer the man,
" Don't say it! Don't you fuckin' say it you
bastard!" He grabbed another beer and bolted out into
the forest behind the mansion. He had to get away from
the man or there would be THREE teammates in Hank's
care.
Scott watched him go, but he didn't follow. " I'll be
here," he whispered to his obsession. He would find a
way to make the man see that it was HIM that Logan
Really loved and wanted... not that barely weaned BOY.
He'd gotten a taste of what fucking the Wolverine was
like, and now he knew there was no turning back. In
time he would get to find out what LOGAN was like.
He'd come around as soon as the KID was out of the
picture for good.
*****
Charles sat beside an inconsolable Jean down at the
boathouse. She hadn't made it to the sofa before she
collapsed. Hank had lifted her from the floor and she
now lay in her bed in front of a roaring fire. His
hands rested on her temples and his eyes were closed
in concentration. What he was seeing made no sense! It
was the truth though, there was no way to lie to a
telepath. "Oh my god...Scott."
Scott seduced Wolverine.
He'd been planning it for months, hiding it behind
his love for Jean. He found a way past the man to the
beast that lurked within. Jean told Scott innocently
that Logan had a crush on him years ago. It was just a
comment spoken in the privacy of their bedroom one
night. She also told him that it was totally forgotten
the moment he laid eyes on the Cajun. Logan had fallen
in love with the thief at first sight. Jean giggled
remembering the warm fuzzy feel of him when he was
introduced to the young Cajun.
Scott however saw a chance, and decided then and there
that he didn't care who was caught in the backlash, he
would have the feral Canadian. After all, HE was there
long before the Cajun. If ANYONE was going to have the
Wolverine it would be him! He became obsessed with the
idea, waited for the perfect moment, and finally found
it. Gambit and Jean were sent on a recruiting mission
weeks before. While they were gone Scott went up to
the room the Canadian shared with his young Cajun
lover. Logan was lonely, and Scott, wearing the young
Cajun's clothes, forced himself on the older man. His
timing had been perfect, the young Cajun opened the
door to his lover roughly taking the team leader on
his bed. Jean heard his tormented scream in her mind
and opened her link to Scott fully to alert him to a
possible attack...
*****
" How is she?" Hank asked quietly from the doorway. He
didn't want to disturb his old friend if he was making
any progress.
" Scott... it was Scott. Logan was feral... not in his
right mind. She... she heard Scott laughing as Remy
collapsed. It brought on his orgasm to watch the young
man fall to his knees...He KNEW Jean was with him in
the link. Hank, he planned this. It was a precise
attack against Gambit. Scott saw him as a threat. Jean
was nothing to him anymore, just a cover... It was
LOGAN he wanted...
Jean suddenly pulled the blanket closer around her
body and moaned... she was just a cover...
*****
Remy was reeling, everything he thought was real was a
lie. Everything he held dear was stripped from him and
he didn't understand why. His mind was in turmoil...
Had he done something? Had he said something? Why
would Logan want to hurt him so badly? It would have
hurt less to be speared by the claws... they were in
HIS bed. The one he slept in on his first night at the
LeBeau house. It represented everything good in his
life. He gave it to Logan as a gift the night Logan
moved into his room... to show the man that he loved
and TRUSTED him!
He couldn't breath, no air seemed to be making it
into his lungs. He was beyond hurt, he was betrayed by
the one person he trusted never to betray him. He
wanted to be sick, but he couldn't find the strength.
He suddenly became aware of a warm body close to him
and the shivers that plagued him grew worse. No! He
couldn't handle being near Logan right now! Not after
what he saw... not after what Logan did...
*****
Storm sat up when she felt Remy's tremors become
worse. She hit her communicator, " Henry! Something is
happening to Remy!" She watched in horror as her young
brother sat up and screamed and screamed and
screamed...
Hank was about to respond when Jean abruptly sat up,
grabbed her head and let out a scream of her own.
" Henry go! I will stay with Jean. I fear she has
connected herself to Remy in some way. Maybe she
thought she could help him, maybe she thought he could
help her! Go!" Charles Xavier had to strengthen his
shields as the overwhelming feelings of pain and
betrayal from the young Cajun and the Phoenix battered
his mind.
*****
Out in the forest Logan heard his lover's scream and
the beast inside him came alive again. His mate was
hurting, he had to fix it. He ran for the mansion, his
senses more alive than ever before. His mate was in
trouble, nothing else mattered. He reached the door
and took the stairs up to the men's wing three at a
time. When he reached the room his mate was trapped
behind he tore the door from it's hinges with a
terrifying roar.
Gale force winds caught him and threw him back
against the wall in the hallway, knocking him
senseless. " You will NOT harm my brother further this
day!" An uncontrollable Goddess with the power of the
elements stood white eyed and glorious behind the
hurricane. She moved to the doorway, arm
outstretched, holding the enemy at bay.
" Ororo stop! Storm, let him go!" Henry tried
desperately to reach the reasonable woman inside the
raging Storm. She would destroy not only the mansion
but her brother's lover if she wasn't contained. "
Ororo, it was Scott!" He had to scream to be heard. He
struggled against the raging storm until he was close
enough to glanced behind the Weather Goddess and see
his patient on the floor. He must have tried to get
away... that was Remy's first response when he was
hurting. Get away, hide the fact that he was in pain
until he came to grips with it, then face the problem
with that infuriating blank mask he so loved to wear.
Remy's head was bent to the ground, hands wrapped
tightly around his waist. Hank hurt for his young
friend, " STORM, I have to get to Remy, Please!"
Ororo suddenly realized what she was doing and the
storm died with a swirl of wind. Papers that were once
on Remy's desk fluttered like snowflakes to the floor,
and Logan sank to his knees, stunned and out of
breath.
" I... I am sorry, I-I lost control... Henry?"
" Yes my dear. Please, would you see to Logan? I fear
something is seriously wrong with our young Cajun
friend." He picked up his bag and skirted past the
woman who stood dazed in the hall. It was rare that
Ororo lost control like this, but Hank was certain
that the mere sight of Logan anywhere NEAR her beloved
Remy at this point would be more than enough of a
trigger. He felt like doing the same thing to the man
not an hour before. For a brief moment he worried
about leaving the two of them alone, but one more look
at his friend and all worries about their safety were
forgotten, "Remy? Remy, can you hear me? " There was
no response from the young man and Hank sighed as he
sat his bag down and bent to scoop the boy up.
" H-he was wit' Scott." It was the softest of whispers
and when Hank looked into his eyes he was staring into
a world of hurt. Hank placed him gently on the bed and
moved to get his bag, " Why? W-why would he do that?
I- I thought h-he loved me. I-I thought..."
Hank wasn't about to get into the whole sorted mess
with a boy that had been so shocked that he closed
himself off to everyone else in the mansion for the
last twelve hours. " Remy, you've had a terrible
shock. I want you to lay down, I am going to give you
a mild sedative, Ro will be with you. You will not be
alone."
Remy was still ghostly pale and he felt as weak as a
kitten, but he suddenly looked up at Hank with wide
eyes," Jean... How's Jean?"
Hank shook his head, the Empath always worried about
everyone else first, it must be a terrible burden
sometimes. " I believe she will be fine now that you
are over your initial shock. She was trapped in your
mind when you shut down."
Remy closed his eyes, " Didn' mean t' do that, sorry,"
he whispered.
" Do not trouble yourself, no real harm done. Can you
sit up and swallow these for me?" Hank started to hand
the young man two small white pills, but when he saw
how badly Remy's hands were shaking he straightened,
" Perhaps I could persuade you to allow me to take
you to the lab? I need to monitor your condition Remy,
I don't like what I'm seeing."
Remy's hands dropped to the bed and he stared down at
them, " I... I don' wan' t' be alone..." His voice was
soft and shaky. He hated that he sounded so needy...
Hank knew there would be tears in his eyes if he
looked so he turned away and let the young man
recompose himself. " Then it's settled. I'm always in
my lab...at least that's what everyone around here
tells me. You can keep me company for a few days...
until I'm sure you're feeling better."
" Merci." Remy really didn't like the lab, but he felt
so abused... like he'd been ripped open and laid out
for the world to see. He couldn't bear the thought of
being alone. His mind automatically went to Logan, and
the scene he walked in on passed before his eyes
again. Cringing he whispered, " Can' be alone..."
Normally he would go to his Stormy's loft in a
situation like this. He'd come to see her as his big
sister and he knew she loved him in return. But if
Stormy was his sister, Henri was his brother and he
needed the strong silent support now as much as he
knew he needed the drugs Henri would give him so that
he could relax and sleep and try to forget.
" Can you make it on your own?"
Hank watched as Remy wrapped all the blankets around
himself and pushed himself up to stand on very shaky
legs, " Oui. This 's kinda funny non, me ASKIN' to
come wit' y'?"
Hank put a supportive arm around him and led him to
the hole where the door used to be, " Yes my friend,
but I'm very glad that you understand that you CAN
come to me."
It was a strange relationship he had with the Cajun.
He saw it the moment he met Remy, the day he came to
the mansion with Storm. This boy had been abused, and
badly, and he was in genuine need of a male friend to
talk to. Remy seemed frightened to be alone with any
of the men, though he hid it well. Hank made a point
of talking to him, and their friendship grew. It took
a long while to get the boy to finally open up about
what his life was like before he was adopted. Hank sat
and held him through the storm of unforgettable
memories and he swore he would look out for the boy
from that moment on, much the way Logan watched
Jubilee.
Bobby was jealous at first, thinking that this new kid
was taking his place as Hank's favorite. But once he
realized how badly the younger man needed his friend,
and that Hank was acting as a brother, and he wasn't
being replaced as bestest bud, he was okay.
Hank let out a sigh of relief that Storm and Logan
were no where near as they exited the room and moved
to the elevator. He hoped that where ever they were
they would remember that Remy loved them both and be
civil to each other.
The Professor touched his mind softly, and Hank
concentrated on his voice. ~ Hank, Scott has
disappeared. I think it would be wise to watch Remy...
Scott,~ he paused, and Hank could sense the pain it
caused him to say the next part of his thought,
~ Scott... is to be considered dangerous until I have
a chance to talk to him.~
~ Understood. I am taking Remy to the lab as we speak.
~ As an after thought he added, ~ How are Logan and
Storm doing? ~
There was a moment of silence and then Charles mind
voice returned, ~ They are talking out in the garden.
They seem to be acting responsibly.~
*****
Logan didn't know where to begin to try and explain to
his friend, and his lover's adopted sister, what had
happened. He decided to be silent and let her start
the conversation.
Ro walked behind Logan out into her garden. It was so
peaceful there. It would help to calm the storm that
still wanted to rage. She could tell by the way he
carried himself that nothing she said could come CLOSE
to the suffering he was already going through. She
wanted to be mad at him, she was still furious that he
hurt Remy, but he obviously already felt tremendous
guilt and remorse. With a deep sigh she began, and
asked the one question she just couldn't find the
answer to,
" Why?..."
Logan felt her pain and confusion, what was he suppose
to tell her? It was a mistake? Obviously. I was
tricked? In a way... but he was a grown man, he knew
better. He turned and looked the woman in the eye,
" I was so lonely," he began, knowing how stupid it
sounded. " I love him Ro... need him..." How was he
supposed to put into words the overwhelming relief he
felt when he caught a whiff of the kid's scent, even
if it was off. It was HIS Remy. He'd come back
finally, after being away for so long...
" You broke his heart," Storm said quietly.
The ache returned to Logan's chest, he'd hurt his
lover. It was the ONE thing in the world he never
wanted to do.
" He TRUSTED you," Storm's voice was tight. She wanted
to lash out again and hurt the man in return.
" I love him Ro..." It was all he could think, all he
could say, all he knew for sure anymore ...
" I don't know if I can ever forgive you." The soft
voice was carried to him on a chill wind, there were
tears falling from the sky...
And if you can't forgive me how can Remy? Logan felt
physically sick for the first time he could remember.
He looked up and let the rain sting his face...
He wished it was possible for him to drown in those
cold tears...
