E-mail lists are a simple and effective way of communication across the Internet. The list enables each subscriber to send a message to all the other subscribers to it, and all to contribute to and see the ensuing discussion. Each list has an address to which messages are sent for such "posting". E-mail lists are sometimes called e-mail conferences, groups or forums (not "fora").
The Green Party of England & Wales, the Scottish Green Party and their sister parties have a number of e-mail lists. Some are for GP members only, others are open to anyone interested. Posting to a GP list is usually restricted to its subscribers, so the list avoids spam from outside. All subscriptions are free unless indicated otherwise. Details of the lists, contacts and how to join appear below. If you have more general queries, please contact John Norris.
{GP-L}
is the main list for internal information and discussion in The
Green Party. All members are welcome, and members of sister GPs can
subscribe as guests. The list is managed by John Norris, and hosted
at eGroups. To join, e-mail
John,
listing your name, postal address and the Green Party which holds
your membership.
Note: {GP-L} replaced the former {gpty.internal} at GreenNet.
{GP-resources} is a specialised list for internal discussion and dissemination in The Green Party of press releases, letters, briefings, responses to consultations, and other materials useful to local and area parties, their candidates and press officers. All members are welcome, and members of sister GPs can subscribe as guests. The list is managed by Martin Hughes-Jones and John Norris, and hosted at eGroups. To join, e-mail John, listing your name, postal address and the Green Party which holds your membership.
{GP-webteam} is primarily an administrative list for the team working on The Green Party's Web site, but is open to other GP members interested. The list is managed by John Norris for team co-ordinator Chris Dixon, and hosted at ONElist. To join, e-mail Chris or John.
{gp-yorks} is a new list for GP members in Yorkshire. It is being developed by Joe Otten, and is hosted at eGroups. To join, e-mail Joe.
{scotgp} is the list for internal information and discussion among members of the independent Scottish Green Party. All members are welcome, and members of sister GPs can subscribe as guests. The list is managed by John Norris, and hosted at eGroups. To join, e-mail John, listing your name, postal address and the Green Party which holds your membership.
{gpty.uk.ref} is an older list for GP materials. Current use is limited, because it has been largely superseded by the more active {GP-resources}. However, this list is still open to anyone interested, and is now hosted by Cameron Spitzer at {greens.org}. To join, e-mail Cameron.
{gpty.uk.forum} is an older list for discussion with GP members, hardly used at all now. Discussion is on {GP-L}. However, this list is still open to anyone interested, and is now hosted by Cameron Spitzer at {greens.org}. To join, e-mail Cameron.
Note: The hosting of these UK lists at {greens.org} now replaces that at GreenNet, whose problems led to their decline. Cameron is currently reorganising lists at {greens.org}, and there may be changes affecting these two. For further information or to make comments or suggestions, please e-mail John Norris.
{green-islands}
promotes communication between GP members in Britain and Ireland.
The Green Islands network comprises the GPs of England, Ireland,
Jersey, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, and meets twice a
year; details are circulated on this list. {green-islands} is used by
delegates and the co-secretaries, and is open to any member of those
GPs. The list is managed by John Norris, co-secretary with Lucille
Ryan-O'Shea, and hosted at eGroups. To join, e-mail
John,
listing your name, postal address and the Green Party which holds
your membership.
Note: {green-islands} replaced the former {gpty.grnisles} at GreenNet.
{north-sea-greens} is for the North Sea Greens network in the European Federation of GPs. The list is for the member GPs' offices, delegates and network co-ordinator Caroline Hoffmann, but is open to others by agreement of a national delegate. Currently the main topic of the network is fisheries. The list is managed by John Norris for the network, and hosted at eGroups. To ask to join, e-mail John, listing your name, postal address and the Green Party which holds your membership, or ask one of your party's delegates; the delegates from The Green Party of England & Wales are John and David Wood.
{baltic-greens} is being started for the Baltic Sea Greens network in the European Federation of GPs. The initial list is member GPs' offices, delegates and the network Bureau, but it is open to other GP members on request. The list is managed by John Norris for the Bureau, and hosted at ONElist. To join, e-mail Stefan Hansen, co-ordinator at the Bureau.
{EFGP-network}
is being started for the European Federation of GPs. The list is
intended for the member GPs' offices, delegates and the Federation
office in Brussels, and will include the official circulations from
the office. However, other GP members can be included. The list is
managed by Niki Kortvelyessy for the Federation Committee, and hosted
at GreenNet. To ask to join, e-mail
Niki.
Note: This list replaces the former {gpty.eur.ref} and {gpty.eur.forum}
at GreenNet.
{gpty.intl}
aims to spread information among Greens around the world, and is open
to all. A feature is the range of postings and repostings from
other GP lists offered by Californian Green Mike Feinstein. The list
is managed by Cameron Spitzer, and hosted at {greens.org}. To join,
e-mail
Cameron.
Note: This hosting at {greens.org} replaces that at GreenNet.
Other Green Parties also have e-mail lists of their own, on which GP members may be welcome as guests. Practice varies, some being restricted to the particular Green Party concerned, such as the Greens of Virginia, but most are open to anyone who abides by the list rules.
The biggest single range of lists is the forums at {greens.org} in California, run by Cameron Spitzer. The emphasis is on the US, but other English-speaking lists are included. It includes gpty.uk.ref, gpty.uk.forum and gpty.intl above. The main list for US Greens, open to members of other GPs, is currently {grns-usa-forum}. For more information e-mail Cameron.
E-mail lists can be anything from a large continuing facility to a short term convenience for a particular project. Anyone prepared to learn how to run the modest technology required can start an e-mail list of their own. Do check first whether there is an existing list covering the same area; duplication simply divides the discussion.
You can find a server who will host your list for a monthly or annual fee, or free in exchange for including advertising. Note that it is better not to host all related lists on the same server; if that has problems, then all go down. Greens in the UK learned this the hard way with GreenNet. Arrangements for hosting vary, but include
