Beautiful Girls and Fools, By John Ainsworth

There is a girl with eyes of green
And hair of red and gold
And truly did she love a Fool
As some strange tale of old.

When her hair would flame and lips would flush
And eyes shine bright like stars
Strong men would launch a thousand ships
And wise old kings fight wars.

The rough brush of her lips
Had the shock of a newborn sun
For to her was given the oldest gift
The gift of the Three in One.

Such great and lovely things though
Are not to fools oft given
For they would walk with blinded feet
Upon the streets of heaven.

Lady though you be far away
And I a Fool absurd
Breaks still this heart once held aloft
By the white wings of your word.
