While baseball fans can hardly wait for spring, it's the coaches who at times dread it.
The name of the game this go-round for a lot of Peninsula Athletic League boys teams is that relatively few have a long list of varsity returnees.
And in the case of first-year Jefferson High coach Manny Hermasillo, there aren't any - not one senior starter.
What that means this part of the year is errors, lots of 'em.
Jefferson (0-6, 0-1) lost its PAL Ocean Division debut, 8-0, to Menlo-Atherton High, Mar. 23.
And again, errors played a big part in preventing the Indians from picking up win No. 1.
"Our pitchers have been doing a good job. It just seems that we always have that one inning where we have errors or mental mistakes, " Hermasillo said.
Again M-A, the Indians were still in contention, trailing 3-0 in the fourth, before a two-out bases-loaded infield error let two more runs across the plate.
Jeff came close to winning twice in preseason - leading Lincoln and Galileo of San Francisco - but again, costly errors surfaced.
"One thing is that they've shown a tremendous amount of enthusiasm, and that’s always good to see," said the Indians' skipper.
Hermasillo's pitching staff includes three right-handed juniors: Miguel Iniquez, Juan Gonzalez, and Normandy Reyes.
Iniquez and Reyes also split time at first base, and Gonzalez can play short.
The other Jeff starters include sophomores Luis Ledesma at catcher, and Francisco Munoz at second base.
Manuel Velasquez is the starting third baseman.
The Indians' outfield includes Hendricks Ramon in left, either Francisco Diaz or Shawn Harvey in center and Paul Matos or Pete Massa in right.
