Programmes:
Our role on the university campus is to run relevant programmes as well as, most
importantly, to simply be around for students. A fair amount of time is spent with
students on a one to one basis.
(i) Gospel : This is our main programme area with a variety
of meetings:
- Main fellowship time during a lunch period
- Evening Bible study (discussing more in depth issues confronting Christians)
- Prayer meetings
- Women's fellowship during lunch time
- Worker's bible study ( with university workers)
- Our students also participate in Kids Club at Anchor House YMCA, which is an outreach
into the Albert Park community (part of the inner city of Durban)
(ii) Training of student committees, small group leaders .
(iii) HIV/AIDS: The Student YMCA HIV/AIDS project uses a peer
educator approach to learning and teaching relevant HIV/AIDS information. University
students are trained to inform school youth about these issues. Their training consists of
six 2 hour sessions (one per week) and includes a small element of facilitation skills
training. The manual being used to train the students has been developed within the YMCA.
Students are then (together with the project facilitator) taken into schools to teach what
they have learned. This is the first time that the Student YMCA has been involved in a
project such as this. Presently, training of the university students is almost complete
and their work in schools will begin during August 1998. This programme is part of the
YMCA SA `Better Life Options' programme being implemented in 15 YMCAs throughout the
country.
