What is it that defines an American? Is it their material possessions? Their health and well-being? Their family? Their job?
An American is a multi-faceted citizen of a multi-faceted country, but by far and away the attribute that marks every American is personal freedom.
This personal freedom is the characteristic that sets every American apart from other citizens of the world, and causes hundreds of thousands to travel to our shores each year, seeking only the freedom to exist as they are.
It was freedom that made this country the extraordinary country that it is today. The freedom to speak or remain silent, the freedom to lead or be led, the freedom to worship or not to worship, and the freedom to employ or be employed, whenever and wherever we see fit.
The key to freedom lies not only in our government and the Constitution by which it must abide, but in the people of America as well, people who believed and still believed that with freedom all things are possible.
Our forefathers fought and died for freedom, our leaders today ensure that we can exercise our liberties, and it is up to us, the citizens of the United States of America to celebrate our freedom. We celebrate our freedom every time we place a ballot into the ballot box, step into our chosen house of worship, or sit down in a public classroom, knowing that we are among the few people in the world whose right to take part in these seemingly commonplace actions is seemingly etched in stone, that of our Constitution.
For was it not that glorious document, along with the Declaration of Independence, that liberated us from our colonial masters and gave us our guaranteed freedoms in one fell swoop? Was it not the Constitution that has protected our liberties to this very day?
I must say that it was these documents which have always protected and always will protect our freedom. And it is for this reason that I strongly encourage every American to utilize their rights to the fullest. If everyone would use their constitutional right to vote, this country would be a better place. I strongly encourage everyone to exercise their rights.
