Teens need to become independent and responsible to make effective decisions. Learning how to make sound decisions and to bring about desired ends is a sign of maturity. Group membership is important during early adolescence, as teens gain skills and confidence with which to take charge of their own lives they don't need to obey the group's values or actions. Teens become less dependent on the group for identity and direction.
Teens need to learn how to understand their own personality. They have always been told what to think and how to behave by their parents. Teens need to take time to think about what they really feel and believe about a situation. They need to have confidence in their own feelings or thoughts in order to act on them. They need to understand their own feelings, beliefs, values and preferences.
Teens need to know their own abilities and limits. This is a continuous process throughout life. Teens must learn to understand themselves as individuals and learn the decision-making process. As teens mature, they continue to join group activities for the fun, companionship and caring relationships but they begin to choose to be alone or with persons outside of the group, too.
