About the Contest...

The Lions International Peace Poster Contest was created in 1988 to give young people an opportunity to express their feelings about peace. Since then, more than one million students from over 50 countries have participated in the annual contest. The theme of the 1997-98 contest is "A World in Harmony." The contest is open to young people worldwide, ages 11-13. However, the contest must be sponsored by a Lions club in a school or with an organized, sponsored youth group (such as Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, YMCA programs, etc.).

One grand prize winner and 23 merit award winners are chosen during the international finalist judging held in February of each year. The grand prize winner receives US$2,500, a plaque and a trip for the artist and two family members to attend the awards ceremony at the United Nations in New York City. Give the Gift of Sight Program With LensCrafters

Since 1988, Lions clubs throughout the U.S. and Canada have worked with LensCrafters stores to collect old, unwanted eyeglasses for recycling to the poor in developing countries. In the U.S., the glasses are sent to one of the five regional Lions Eyeglass Recycling Centers where they are prepared for distribution by Lions and other groups.

In 1991, LensCrafters began working with Lions clubs in developing nations to conduct their own optical missions. To date, LensCrafters optometrists and opticians have served more than 107,000 people in 10 countries.

As a result of early success with these programs, LensCrafters adopted a goal to hand-deliver eye care to a million people in need by the year 2003. To accomplish this, the company now offers several free and reduced-cost eye care programs in North America. When providing assistance to others, Lions are encouraged to utilize these resources:

Gift of Sight OnSite Certificates: Lions clubs and other groups may obtain a limited number of pairs of glasses for people in need free of charge.

Lions Special Price: Once charitable certificates are exhausted, Lions are able to purchase an unlimited number of pairs of glasses for needy individuals at a special price of $50 per pair.

Hometown Day: Each December, LensCrafters stores set aside a special morning to provide free eye exams and glasses to local residents in need pre-determined by Lions and other charitable groups.

Last year, Lions helped more than 10,000 people through the Gift the Gift of Sight North American program. Members can contact the Gift of Sight captain at their local LensCrafters, or call the Media Relations Department at Lions International Headquarters for a brochure at (630) 571-5466, ext. 372.

Lions Recycle For Sight Program recycle

There is a great need for recycled eye wear. --- The World Health Organization estimates that the eyesight of one-fourth of the world's population can be improved through the use of corrective lenses. Unfortunately for many, a pair of glasses is both unaffordable and inaccessible. In developing countries, an eye exam costs as much as one month's wages, and a single doctor may serve a community of hundreds of thousands of people.

For more than 60 years, individual Lions clubs and districts have collected old, unwanted eyeglasses for re-distribution to the poor in developing countries.

To increase public awareness for this service initiative, thousands of Lions throughout the U.S. and Canada sponsored the first-ever Lions Recycle For Sight Month in May 1996. Thanks in-part to nationwide publicity in the U.S., the program experienced significant success.

The general public is encouraged to donate their used eyeglasses and sunglasses to their local Lions club, or to send them to one of the five regional Lions Eyeglass Recycling Centers listed on our web page.

Lions Recycle For Sight is designed to run in conjunction with, or in addition to, any collection efforts a Lions club may already sponsor. Members can obtain program guide and publicity materials by contacting the Media Relations Department at Lions International Headquarters at (630) 571-5466, ext. 358.
