We had a wonderful International Day last month. The International Club worked hard to put the show together. I enjoyed most of the performances; however, I couldn’t help being a little distraught over the presence of the band, chorus, orchestra and AFJROTC. Even though their performances were excellent, I feel that International Day should consist of the International Club members showing their own cultures. An assembly should not last three hours, but our International Day was almost four hours long. The students and faculty became restless and sleepy, which wasn’t fair to the performers who went later in the show.
Unless the band, orchestra, ROTC and chorus perform routines that directly relate to international themes, there is no point for them to perform on International Day. Their performances were well done and the school should give them their own American assembly so they can show off their talents. The International theme was “Voices around the World.” Therefore, the I-Day assembly should only contain the voices of different countries, cultures and their customs — from the Americas to Europe to Africa to Asia to the Pacific rim.
