First the Serbs started the war in Slovenia, but it ended it quickly. Then it moved to Croatia and went on for a year. Then to my country, Bosnia. I could have never imagined the destruction and it took five years to stop it. They destroyed everything — the future of so many families. There is not a single person I know who is lucky now, with the situation like it is now.
But let’s forget that. Now Kosovo. Maybe the Serbs think it is cool to kill innocent people. Kosovo was a part of Yugoslavia, but of course it was always different. Kosovo always had its own language. In fact, I understand Serbian people, they understand me, but the people from Kosovo understands neither of us. They want a separate country.
I totally support the actions taken by Bill Clinton in Yugoslavia. I think that in all of these years since the former Yugoslavia collapsed the Serbs have done everything to harm others and to make people hate each other. Now they should finally pay for it. I am content that the Serbs are enduring the pain and suffering that they have caused others in the past. We were happy together in Yugoslavia, but the Serbs made us hate each other.
WordSmith has a policy of not printing anonymous editorials. The above op-ed columns are written by BLS students who are from Yugoslavia. Their names have been changed because the Kosovo war is ongoing. This breach of our stated policy is made only because this is a time of war. |
