Blumke returns after absence from wreck

Imagine lying bloody underneath a two-ton car that is about four or five inches off the ground and the only thing you are able to see is the transmission.

This is how Bill Blumke, a Smith social studies teacher, described the gory accident that happened to him on last Sept. 1 at 10:15 p.m.

While riding his motorcycle to the AutoZone on Randleman Road, Blumke had a Honda Civic quickly pull from the parking lot and run over him. To get the vehicle off, the driver had to reverse the car, running over him once again.

Coincidentally, Blumke, using his good arm, waved a medical student from Wake Forest over to help the injured teacher until an ambulance arrived. Blumke had to have surgery three times, for his arm, shoulder and leg.

As a result Blumke lost 55 pounds, took half a year off from teaching and underwent extensive physical therapy. And he remains on physical therapy.

Blumke kept close tabs on his classes while substitute Stephanie Wall taught during his recovery. He returned to the classroom March 22 to begin the final quarter.

"The students have been very cooperative," he said. "I would also like to thank the administrators who helped him during my absence."
