SPJ, Ad Club to
Host 'Juice' Night
Greenlee School alums return Tuesday night, Jan. 17 to share their experiences working at �Juice,� a magazine published every Wednesday by the Des Moines Register.
Cavan Reagan, Tim Paluch and Justin Shadel will speak about their jobs in design, reporting and advertising, respectively, at the magazine as well as the origin and goals of the publication.
The event will begin at 7:30 p.m. in room 172 of Hamilton Hall on the Iowa State campus. Hamilton Hall is located on Wallace Road, across from the university�s power plant.
This event, co-sponsored by the Iowa State student chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and the Ad Club, is free to everyone. Food and drinks will also be provided. The meeting, which is also the regular monthly meetings of SPJ and the Ad Club, will last an hour with questions following the presentation. The Ad Club will hold a business meeting from 7:15 until 7:30.
Chuck
Offenburger, author of a recent book on the history of high school sports in
Iowa and editor and publisher of www.offenburger.com, will be speaking
Wednesday, Feb. 1 at the next SPJ meeting. The event is also free to all.
Offenburger was a
long-time reporter for the Des Moines Register, writing the �Iowa Boy� column
for 21 years. His book, �Bernie Saggau & the Iowa Boys/The Centennial
History of the Iowa High School Athletic Association,� was published last year
when IHSAA celebrated its 100th birthday. For 16 years, he was co-host
of RAGBRAI.
Entries for the Mark of Excellence Awards sponsored by SPJ are due to ISU chapter adviser David Bulla in 116 Hamilton Hall by Thursday, Jan. 19, at 5 p.m. Entry is free. The contest is open to journalists in print (newspaper and magazine), broadcast (radio and television), photography and online media. Works had to be published between Jan. 1, 2005, and Dec. 31, 2005. There are 43 categories.
The top-three will be given their awards at the SPJ Region VII conference in Wichita, Kan., in the spring. Winners will advance to the national competition. For more information, contact Bulla at dbulla@iastate.edu or (515) 294-0658.
