May 15, 2003 |
1. Today you will turn in your resume and cover letter. Each part is worth 50 points. Your resume must be completed before you come to class. Your instructor will ask to see it at the beginning of class. 2. Sign MMC 2100 class contracts. 3. Comma usage. Students will receive "Commas, Commas and More Commas" handout in lecture. 4. Next lab: Writing a hard news story. Study relevant chapters in Rich textbook. 5. Media Jobs and Internship Web sites. See Links on this site. 6. (a) Types of cover letters. (b) What goes in a cover letter? See form in Rich textbook. Also, this is a formal business letter. Keep it simple. Be direct. Sell your strengths. Make sure your cover letter is written to a real business and a real personnel director. Bring this person's address to class. 7. Lab 2: Write your cover letter in class. See assignment sheet that your instructor will distribute to you. It includes a rubric. Your cover letter should be not more than one page in length. You have 90 minutes to write it. Your instructor will call time with 20 minutes left. Make sure you proofread carefully. Late papers will receive a 10-point deduction. 8. Remember that after your instructor returns these, you should correct both the cover letter and resume and send both to the media company you have chosen. The UF COJ&C advises students not to begin an intership until they have taken at least 10 hours in the college. However, every bit of experience you can get will help your career. 9. Keep reading the newspapers every day for approximately 30 minutes. |
