MOCK PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

Goals/Objectives/Student Outcomes/Performance Expectations:

Students will be able to:

§ State the names of the two major political parties; and any other third parties that they have knowledge of. Explain the differences between the two major political parties and their different platforms. Identify the symbols that represent the two major political parties.

§ Formulate ways in which the political parties attract voters to vote for them and their candidates that they put forth.

§ Vote for the candidate that they find to be most appealing to them.

§ Identify which of the advertising methods were successful in persuading them to vote a certain way and how others could have been improved.

§ Evaluate the effectiveness of public opinion in influencing and shaping public policy

Procedures:

Day One:

Procedure one: The class will be split into separate groups; each one representing an imaginary political candidate.

Procedure two: With the students in their groups, they will then decide on a presidential candidate, vice-presidential candidate and campaign managers. Once that has been established, they will then create a name for their political party and come up with a logo that represents them.

Procedure three: Each group will come up with a platform that describes positions their party will adopt. The list of positions will be what they are going to base their campaign on. These should address each of the www.speakout.com website topics.

Procedure four: The lists of things each group will need to accomplish are:

§ Creative name for their party and candidate.

§ Campaign slogan.

§ Banner that displays their candidate’s name in some way.

Buttons or bumper stickers.

A website that explains your platform and your candidate

§ Each candidate will create two television commercials. One commercial shall state the party’s platform and what the party stands for. In addition to this, there will be a persuasive commercial in which the candidate will try to convince the voters to vote for him/her. Each commercial should last no more than two minutes.

Each presidential and vice-presidential candidate will prepare a speech to be given in front of the class. The speech should address why the voters should vote for them over the other candidates. Once again it should incorporate their party’s platform and issues they wish to push once they get into the office. These speeches should be between three and four minutes. There will be a penalty for running too long or short.

This week we will work on the above decisions and points. Next week will feature campaign events and issue debates. The schedule for this will be forthcoming.
