The goal of the Math Recovery class is to advance the knowledge of low-attaining first grade students to a level where they can learn successfully in a regular classroom. Each student is first given an assessment to discover his mathematical expertise. The results of this assessment is then used to develop an individualized teaching framework. The student is continually reevaluated, so that teaching strategies and activities can be adjusted to meet the student's growing knowledge.
This is the second year of Math Recovery at Mineral Springs School. In the 1996-97 school year there were 13 Math Recovery graduates. In this its second year there will be approximately 11 graduates by the end of school.Mr. Smith works with some students on a 1-to-1 basis, but the majority of his students work in small groups of 6-8 students. Some students have gained enough math skills through group lessons to be taken from the group to receive classroom grade level instruction.
Between 35 and 40 students will have been served in some capacity by Math Recovery and TitleI Math. This is approximately 50% of the first grade class at Mineral Springs School.
