Our kindergarten students have had a very productive year of learning and growing. We learned the letter and letter sounds with our "friend", Astro. Astro comes from outer space to bring us homework and ideas for each letter of the alphabet. He surprised us at the end of the year by visiting the children. We have gone on several field trips this year that were the culmination of units being studied.
We visited the Pumpkin Patch in October to pick out a pumpkin and see the various animals there. At the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro, the students had the opportunity to see the animals in their natural environments. In December, the classes attended a production of the famous NUTCRACKER ballet. Our most recent trip was to the Natural Science Center in Greensboro. This Center has dinosaur bones and fossils of long ago and also many of North Carolina's natural resources available. Probably the most popular with the students, though, is the petting zoo that was there for them to enjoy.
This is Ms. Pate's 1997-98 Kindergarten class wearing their "Thinking Caps" and "Totally Terrific Me" T-shirts. The caps were made to wear during the class' work sessions, to help them concentrate on learning and keeping on task. The T-shirts were made and worn to help promote self-esteem. Each week a student was chosen to be the Totally Terrific Me student. During that week, the child was the line leader, and got to bring things from home that were special about them to share with the other students. Each student looked forward to their turn.It has been a good year and we wish everyone a happy, safe summer so they'll be ready to be the best First Graders they can be.
