September 11, 2001…America is attacked by terrorists. Two hijacked planes flew into towers one and two of the World Trade center and another crashed into the Pentagon. The planes which crashed into the World Trade towers flew right into the middle of the buildings. One almost flew straight through. Soon after the crashes, both towers one and two collapsed. The crash into the Pentagon left one side of the building collapsed also. The attack left many dead and many others injured or missing.
Immediately following these events, thousands of rescue workers from all over the tri-state area rushed to the scene to help the injured and search for the missing. Many of these rescue workers risked or lost their lives in order to save those of total strangers. These workers are now considered by many to be true “American heroes”.
People from all over the country donated blood, clothing, food, money, flashlights and their time to those who were mourning or suffering. A telethon was aired in order to raise money to donate to the relief funds. The telethon featured many celebrities who supposedly had to donate $1,000,000 in order to participate. The telethon was a great success – it earned more than $140,000,000.
This event is truly a tragedy. It affected people all over the country both physically and emotionally. Thousands of people lost loved ones and many others will have to live with injuries for the rest of their lives. The tragedy, being the worst act of terrorism in the history of our country, did have one positive outcome, however. The United States is now more united than it ever has been before. The terrorists may have thought they achieved their goals of bringing down our country, but even though we have lost many lives and historic building, we are closer than ever before and will stay united in what could be a long fight between us and the terrorists.
