As part of the JET Programme, you will be given a ticket and fly out from an appointed city to Tokyo's Narita airport. Most people will be flown out Business Class. This is done because the arrival time for ALTs in the JET Programme is in the summer peak, and economy seats are in short supply. The vast numbers of new JET participants who will arrive from the northern hemisphere in July necessitates business-class flights for many new ALTs. At the end of your contract, you will be given the equivalent monies for a Y2 class (economy) ticket by the City of Sendai. Those people in the Hello World Programme (HWP) are not entitled to such a ticket.
Basically, how you get to work is your responsibility. Usually there is more than one way to get to school. Please ask your supervisor to explain the details of the transportation options/routes available for getting to work everyday as well as getting around town.
Sendai has them all! The public transportation network is great. The schedules are easy to understand once someone shows you how they work. We tried to put you as close to your school as possible. If you are far away, you will be given a travel allowance.
As is written in our Sendai contract, purchasing a motor vehicle is permitted; however, we recommend that you get consent from your principal before you begin to drive to work. You must have an international driver’s license or obtain a Japanese drivers licenses, and prove to the Board of Education that you have the legally specified level of auto insurance.
