Money

How much?

You will receive a base salary of ¥3,600,000 per year (¥300,000 per month). After your medical/dental insurance, pension, rent, and school lunch deductions, you should net about ¥265,000 per month. You will be paid in CASH on the 21st of each month. You will receive an envelope with the cash in it. Please remember that, although Japan is safe, it is not perfect! Get to the bank ASAP. We highly recommend that you bring roughly ¥200,000 to hold you until your first payday, August 20th. Japan is very expensive and you’ll need that amount of money to cover expenses such as, food, nights out, things for your apartment, and perhaps a telephone line.

Medical Benefits

Every month a premium for medical and dental coverage is deducted from your salary. This is not optional. Upon every doctor’s visit, you are responsible for the 20% portion which the insurance does not cover. All ALTs also have travel and accident insurance which covers them while they are travelling outside of Japan. The details of these coverages will be discussed further at the local orientation. If possible, it would be a good idea to maintain some health insurance in your home country as well.
