Candle Carving

We can't drive to the shop down the street and find candles with whatever image we need. Let's face it; a blue candle with the sacred animal of Inana just isn't a common need for most folks. Because of this it's perfectly normal to carve your own image or phrase into the wax of your candle. Runes and symbols are most common. Paint works as well. Below I've provided some examples of what you might use. There is no rule for what image is correct. It's whatever feels right to you. Feel free to be as elaborate or simple as you desire.

Blessing Candles

Lastly, it is important to bless your candles before you use them. It increases their power and helps you focus on what you need. This is especially important if you bought the candles in a store. You never know who's touched them or left a residue behind. It's best to start fresh.

To bless a candle simply choose a night during the waxing moon. Rub oil from the center of the candle upward and ask for the candle to be cleansed and blessed by the divine. Do the same from the center of the candle downward. You can use any oil you wish. Some people mix special herbal oils while others buy a bottle of olive oil. As long as you focus and feel the essence of the Divine enter your candles, the rest doesn't matter. Once you are finished let the candles rest in the moonlight or on your altar. By the next morning they'll be ready to use.
