History of Salyersville First Baptist Church

In January, 1909, Rev. Garland Sledge along with his songleader, Bro. Ruth, held a revival in Salyersville. Several students at Magoffin Baptist Institute, as well as a number of townspeople were saved and baptised in Licking River. They had no church to attend. On January 21, 1909, a group of these baptized believers met at the old court house and voted (by standing up) to build a church. The present site was chosen and bought from Chick Patrick. A coffin shop was on the site at the time. On this day the First Baptist Church of Salyersville, Ky was organized. The founders and first preachers were Garland Sledge and Lewis F. Caudill,.Early Trustees were Branch Higgins, Calloway Howard, and M.F. Patrick. About twenty-five members made up the church then and baptizings were conducted in the Licking River that runs by the church. The early church (built in 1911) was a native stone building with a small balcony. It was torn down in 1928 to make room for the new road. At that time the road was between the church and the river. The present church was built at this time. It was written that the first brick work on the church was to be finished by the week of January 16, 1928. Mr. Bob Dickens had the contract for the first brickwork. Some of the ministers of the FBC have been Garland Sledge, Lewis F. Caudill, G.T. Hinton (1922), Paul Thompson (1925), R.E. Booker (1927), Jack Thompson (1930), Ben Caudill(1924), M.D. Denney (1937), James Walters (1941), Robert Regan (1943), Winn T. Barr (1945), M.D. Oats (1947), John Toler (1948), Bro.
