Joe E. Brown and George Jr.
My father never talked too much about WW II. It wasn't a pleasant time, and it had too few pleasant memories, yet he did talk about Joe E. Brown and how unlike most of the big named entertainers who performed in safe places far from the front, the comedian with the big grin had even a bigger heart for he too risked his life to see the troops no matter how close to the line of fire they might be. Few people even remember Joe E. Brown today, but his spirit lives on not only in his films but in the hope and laughter he spread to those soldiers so far from home, and those family members waiting for their loved ones to come home again.
