HEARTS OF GOLD
The restless wind rattled at the door
And howled in every nook and cranny.
The night was black with clouds galore
Rushing in haste across the dismal sky.
The old house stood firm and strong.
The fire roared and sent warmth around
To all in the cosy room, a happy throng,
Tonight they were warm, not on the ground.
After their large family had all left home,
The couple wanted the home filled with joy again,
So every night around the city they did roam
Bringing in young and old out of the cold and rain.
They were warned that something bad would happen,
They would be robbed, mugged or even much worse.
But they prayed for safekeeping, thought good of all men,
Tramps and gypsies loved them, were free from any curse.
They passed away together, one lovely summer day,
Thousands came to bid them a fond and loving farewell,
In groups the street folks came, each knelt to pray
And place a single flower, and they shed tears as well.
For thus passed from earth two souls full of love,
Not just for their own kind, but for all mankind,
They did not die rich or famous, yet in courts above
They will gain a glorious mansion, the best you could find.
