SWEPT DOWN
The Assyrians swept down to conquer their foe,
The children of God full of fear, worry and woe,
The had not listened to the prophets clear voice
Telling them to repent and in their God rejoice.

Repent they cried, remember God’s holy ways,
Those prophets cried loud warnings all their days,
But people would not listen, God was on their side,
God would never from them His face ever hide.

They broke every commandment, turned to Baal
Thought the prophets silly them to repentance call,
At the height of their sinning the Assyrians swept down,
But their God they had forsaken turned away with a frown.

Off to captivity or cruel death because of their many sins
Mocked at their words, just thought them mere whims,
Now they remembered the many times that happened before,
Of how they were punished when they broke God’s holy law.

How different are we today than the Israelites of old,
How many times in our lives to do have to be told
By our prophet and leaders to always choose the right,
Do we always listen and then serve with all our might?

Or are we deaf to the words and blind to His teaching,
Turn away our hearts and mind from God’s holy preaching?
Let us learn and take heed of those scriptures now so old,
So strive all our lives to obey His word, stay close to the fold.
