THE OLD VILLAGE CHURCH - Inspired by a painting by Doris Brown
At the curve in the road and at the top of the hill
Stands a very old church, near the water mill,
Its made of grey stone, with stained windows small,
The door is never locked, anyone may come and call,
Graves are well tended, though ancient as can be,
At the side of the gate stands an old twisted yew tree,
The path to the door is well worn by many feet
Who worshiped for centuries, their God to greet.
Inside the benches shine in deep tones of red,
The candles the only light, by which is read
Words from the Holy Bible as old as can be
By a man who is old and finds it hard to see.
Set on the hill that church is a beacon to all,
Come to your God who saved you from the fall,
Lights from candles that flicker bright in the night,
Showing the way towards the truth and the light.
