THANKSGIVING

Pumpkins of all sizes, bright orange are seen,
Gourds, all shapes, all shades of yellow and green,
Apple and pear tree branches hang low with their load
Of ripened fruit, farmers sell them by the side of the road,
Along with cabbage, carrots, beets and cauliflower,
And many other bounties that are ready by the hour.
The last of the plums and the long string bean,
And oh, the yams and just dug potatoes are seen.
The gifts of earth for this year, now nearly complete,
Are stored in homes, silos, barns, food the cold to meet,
So hunger will not strike man or beast in lean times
When the cold cuts like a knife and the wind whines.
Let us for just one day as we feast, thank our God above
For this country, it’s bounties given to us with love,
To us His children, look at the table lovingly spread,
Then in reverence sweet, pray with bowed head
For those who are hungry and cold, all in need
Of even the simple things of life, who do not feed
On the richest of food and meat. Thank God this day
And very day we live, with love, to Him always pray.
