GOODBYE
Goodbye green river banks and bright flowers,
Goodbye gentle zephyrs and summer showers,
Fading are the roses that so long seem do bloom,
For here comes sailing along is the harvest moon.
The fields of wheat are harvested safe and sound,
All we see is rich brown earth covering the ground,
All save the pumpkin patch, vivid and bright it glows,
Those too will go then we know autumn will close.
The leaves fall from the trees like multi-coloured rain,
Walking through them knee deep time and time again,
The sun rises and sets, it seems in more pomp and glory,
Giving us some reprieve from the start of the icy story.
Yet the tree I see through my front window pane
Seems some new spark of life did somehow gain,
All the leaves hang on still a lovely shade of green,
It is the end of October, this sight is not normally seen.
The maple across the street is half bare, each leaf red,
Bright yellow the birch most fallen on the flower bed,
Although the poplar across the street is still well clad,
Those leaves not shedding, it makes me feel quite glad.
For it may mean that winter will be slow in coming to us,
Even some birds reluctant to fly south, they still make a fuss
In the early morning, when usually the dawn chorus is weak
This time of year, that gives me more of the comfort I seek.
For we spent last year up north, where winter is long and cruel
So I am hoping this year nature may bend her golden rule,
Keep beautiful fall here longer, so ice cold winds dont blow,
It can wait until Christmas eve 3before it begins to snow.
