        SHORTER DAYS
Now August is ending the shadows start to grow,
The days are getting shorter, night starts to show
Earlier now and stays longer each precious morn,
We do not have to get up early to see the dawn.

The berries are bountiful this year, fruit everywhere,
There is even just a little nip in the longer night air,
The moon is larger, even waxing she looks larger
Than last month, and she shines much brighter.

The birds are beginning to gather in long lines up high,
They’re earlier this year, they seem to be ready to fly
Off to warmer places, off to lands warm and far away,
I hope they do not fly south for many a long day.

Shorter days yes, yet more summer should come,
The south wind can still bring warm days of sun,
The lakes still be free from ice and cold snow,
Please summer hang in there, do not yet go.

We know that the days now will much shorter be,
But the days need not get cold and stay snow free,
Although I love the night with starry skies and moon,
I hope that the cold of winter does not come too soon.
