TEN PERCENT DEPOSIT
Scrimping and saving, counting every penny,
Treats while Brian was away there werent any,
We were saving to buy our very first little home
When he came out of the army no more to roam.
I watched it grow brick by brick went once a week,
Dad took me in his old car, he too wanted to peek
At the progress and see if it was built just right,
It was quite small but to me such a pretty sight.
Going to the markets material for curtains to buy,
Even won a comfortable chair, I gave a happy sigh,
Lace right from the factory, seconds, very cheap,
Brian was making a hall carpet which long we did keep.
One day the papers came to say it would be ours soon,
Both signatures needed came in the mail round about noon,
Waiting for the forms from Germany to come to me,
Caused just a little trepidation, fear and uncertainty.
Happy day came when we moved in, no money to spare,
I had bought food over the months, we didnt have a care,
Bright coloured brand new home in a good neighbourhood,
Gave us a sense of well being, twas until parenthood.
After two children there was no longer enough room
To live there, so we had to move, maybe too soon,
But there will always be a special place in my heart
For our first little home, and sorry we had to part.
