A GLASS OF WATER PLEASE
Goodness know how many times I heard that request,
Disturbing us parents from our much needed rest,
It was never the glass of water they ever really needed,
But some fear quelled, knowing their plea was heeded.

Usually in a bad storm, or after some traumatic day,
And from them kind healing sleep slips right away,
Maybe another story or sing a comforting hymn,
A reassuring kiss, telling them nothing can get in.

A glass of water if ignored and if often asked for,
May be scary for a child, and fear grow for sure.
It usually is a call for help, for they know no other way,
Or can’t admit, or the words, Mom I’m scared want to say.

Just imagine lying scared awake in the dark of night,
Especially during a storm, with bright streaks of light
And the loud rolls of thunder that rebounded everywhere,
A glass of water please, means, ‘parents are you there.’
