A BIG CANOE
I saw some canoes for sale, the ones I used to like,
Long, thin and sleek, went through water as a pike
On the water, full of grace and speed moving so fast
As the paddles dipped silently as the world went past.
Riding over a waterfall like joining the salmon race,
Muscles straining to stay in control then find a place
Where very few humans have been and look and see
A hidden place that captures your heart completely.
Age has made a difference, but that feeling is still there,
To glide over the water, feel a warm wind in your hair,
But a canoe that is a little wider so it will not easily roll,
And a little deeper so that I may feel more in control.
Then stay in smooth lakes and slow flowing rivers wide,
Far away from the sea so not affected by a changing tide,
But to feel the power of the dip and swing that carries you
Would still send in my still young heart, memories renew.
