WAR BECAME A THIEF
Just a quick moment for the two, a hidden kiss,
A moment in the busy duties, captured bliss.
The house maid and the butler in love indeed,
The same day off would really meet a need.
The house maid explained that she is walking out
With Harry the butler and would marry without a doubt
If they could have the same day off to be together more,
Or the only time they could meet was by the kitchen door.
So it was kindly arranged and soon the two were wed,
Still worked together with hope for much joy ahead
They had no children, years were part of masters family,
Though definitely servants they were always treated kindly.
Master had been an army man, a general for many years,
Two sons wanting to join up and fight off the cruel foes
Both were old enough when the time came and Harry too,
All went off the war, the old general also joined the crew,
Just women left in the house save for the young kitchen lad
Everyone pitched in best they could, but all were very sad,
Short furloughs were a great celebration whoever came on leave,
The happiness in the home was wonderful you must believe.
Yet one by one sorrow came to take a loved ones life away,
Until there was no one left to give them a joyous, happy day.
Mistress and all her staff seemed to be full of pain and grief,
Look at the happy couple after ten years, war became a thief.
