SWEET BASIL
The first thing to show in my herb garden this year,
Even before all the snow had melted, the earth clear,
Was my sweet basil with it’s fragrance in the air,
A huge patch of this plant, it’s taste wanting to share.

We only planted two very small shoots just a year ago,
I was told that frost would kill it and would not grow
Again a second year, so I could not believe my eyes
When my herb garden produced this wonderful prize.

There has already been quite a lot freely given away,
Now the parsley, chives and sage are well under way,
The thyme is another story, nor rosemary can I see,
But they both could be much late bloomers maybe.

I love a fresh herb garden close to my own back door,
Run outside and gather a pitch or two or even more
To add to a favourite meal to make it taste just right,
And the colours make the garden such a pretty sight.
