Festivals in the month of Masi

In this month the 3 day theppa utsavam takes place at the temple tank (tirumukkolam) in Srivilliputtur. The theppa utsavam starts the day before pournami and concludes the day after pournami. A small Theppam is built for the occassion and on all three days tubelights are installed on wooden poles sorrounding the tank on all four sides.Even the Yenna kappu mandapam is decorated very well with extensive lighting arrangements.
The theppam (float) is artistically prepared with bamboo sticks and is usually square shaped ,rising about 20 m from the water and is built to accomodate around 20 persons. It is also lighted very well in the front and inside.

On the first day Sri Andal and Sri Rangamannar ride the theppam. On the second day sridevi, bhoomadevi,Sri periyaperumal,Sri srinivasar and periyazhwar are in the theppam and on the third day Sri sundararaja perumal with thayar, sri kannapiran rukmani ,satyabhama, Sri Ramapiran, seetha and Sri laksmana have their ride in the theppam The float festival takes place in the evening around 8 pm. The float(theppam) goes along the sides of the tank 3 times and it usually takes around an hour to complete the 3 rounds.Inside the float a group of artistes play the nadaswaram.Members of the Vedaparayana ghosti chant the vedas. The Archakas occassionally show dhepams to the lord. The float is pulled by the the devotees walking along the outer pavement of the tank using a rope.Care is taken so that the float moves gently in the water and does not hit the sides of the tank. After the rounds are completed the dieties come in a procession through the singamada and vazhaikulam streets while going to the temple.
