Kindergarten

Creative kindergarten students study the alphabet, sounds, and skip counting. They also have hands on activities, counting blocks, and draft books.

Kindergarten teachers explain what makes class exciting for their students.

1.Learning through "PLAY"
2.Working with all Kindergarten/PPCD students and teachers (BELT)
3.Starting school
4.Show-and-Tell
5.Always actively involved

The kindergarten students participate in the following field trips, projects, and special events: visiting the zoo, a farm, and a nursing home, having a Thanksgiving feast, making t-shirts, applesauce, and popcorn, and studying animals, sand, and cricket jumping estimation.

To keep their classrooms disciplined, the teachers make classroom rules, switch projects, and use a stoplight:

green = the student is following directions
yellow=warning
red=needs to be disciplined (teacher decides punishment to fit behavior).

The kindergarten students are expected to have the love of learning, have new experiences, and to be prepared for first grade.

One of the most important parts of the Burks Kindergarten is the B.E.L.T. system. B.E.L.T. stands for Burks Early Learning Together. In the B.E.L.T. system, the kindergarten and Early Childhood classes group their children and rotate classes. They have an art center, math/science class, reading/language class, and homeliving/active play centers. They also play with animals, and cooking activities. Each child goes to specialized centers for eight hours a week. This is unique to the McKinney I.S.D.

The kindergarten teachers enjoy Burks because of the students and their parents, the staff, and of course, the principal.

Burks kindergarten is enjoyable not just for the teachers, but the students, too!!!
