Subway Drama

I was waiting for my train in the usual congested crowd. Everyone so eager to get a seat, rather than stand, that everyone stands as close to the edge of the platform as they can. No one takes any notice of the yellow line. It's a ruthless game. Sure, everyone acts calm, but as soon as that train rolls up, it's every man for himself.

Then I saw this girl. This girl who stood out from the line of people gathered along the edge of the platform. She seemed to be almost hanging off the edge of the platform. I was immediately concerned. She kept lunging forward as the jostling crowd kept knocking her from behind. Her feet were so close to the edge, I just knew she would fall onto the track. My heart started racing, so I pushed my way through the crowd towards her. A train was approaching, and the girl didn't look as though she could hold on any longer. A ruthlessly barged my way through the crowd. As I pushed through the last few barriers of bodies, she slipped! I grabbed her around the waist and pulled her back onto the platform, just as the train came speeding past her. She let out a scream. She turned to me and slapped my face, and then she screamed out, "Help! Police! I'm being robbed!" I didn't understand it. Surely she realised I had saved her life. Instead of gratitude I am accused of trying to snatch her purse!

A nearby police officer comes running to the girl's assistance. He grabs me by the arm, and pulls me away from the crowd. I begin to protest. I exclaim, "Officer. It's a misunderstanding! Please, I was just trying to..." As I reached mid way through my pleas, calling louder to drown out the roar of another oncoming train, the crowd let out a scream. Both the officer and I turned our attention immediately on the crowd. The girl had done this time, what I had prevented her from doing the first time. She had jumped in front of the oncoming train.
