tricky - maxinquaye

"i drink till i'm drunk & i smoke till i'm senseless, the illusion of confusion it's not from where i'm sat." ok, this album was released like 47 years ago. so? i'd heard all about the amazing tricky but for some reason never bought an album. maybe it's cause i'm usually broke, i don't know. it is the perfect make out album. it is a tiny morsel too hip-hop for my total liking and i don't care for the gun cocking sound in track 11. i don't know that it's a gun for sure, but it probably is since tricky is a black man. it's scary. he laughs evil laughs. the female vocals are mesmerizing. he curses. what more could you ask for? [disclaimer: i love black people. i have lots of black friends.]

tracks: overcome, ponderosa, black steel, hell is around the corner, pumpkin, aftermath, abbaon fat track, brand new you're retro, suffocated love, you don't, strugglin', feed me.

deftones - around the fur

in my measly 23 years on earth this time, if i have learned one thing about my life it's that people oftentimes see me as a project. they want to "fix" something about me. i acquired a copy of this cd from a friend who handed it to me and boldly stated "i will turn you on to metal." during my protest, he shut me up by saying "listen...i turned a black hip hop guy on to metal". i was not impressed, and made up my mind to not like this album and of course, i do. i love it when that happens. it's very aggressive and heavy, but i wouldn't categorize it as heavy metal. his voice - chino, i think his name is - is guttural and desperate. i mean, when he says "i'm feelin' sick, i'm feelin' sick" you really believe him, especially when he follows it with recurrent harsh cursing and insane laughter [which could be mistaken for dry heaves, i guess]. i listen to this cd while i'm at work, but never while driving home from work. it makes me feel aggressive. if my car broke down in hillsboro, texas on a hot summer day, or if i got laid off from my job, or if i lost my rent money, this cd would be the perfect accompaniment to help ease my pain. deftones is def, and i'm pretty sure that's good.

tracks: my own summer [shove it], lhabia, mascara, around the fur, rickets, be quiet and drive [far away], lotion, dai the flu, headup, mx.

dubstar - goodbye

i'd compliment this album by branding it a must-have, but it's not for everyone. i mean, not everyone enjoys listening to a close to perfect blend of enchanting swarthy pop surrounding a voice that is best described as ethereal. i just got it in the mail yesterday so i haven't had the chance to listen to the entire cd uninterrupted but had listened to real audio clips at cdnow and just had to surrender eighteen dollars [only because it could not be found in any music shop around here - i searched] for it. it's worth it for "no more talk" alone. other highlights include their cover of "st. swithin's day", "just a girl she said" and the massive attack inspired "stars". this is the US version and includes bonus tracks from their debut disgraceful, along with three remixed tunes. rush to cdnow now.

tracks: stars, inside, cathedral park, just a girl she said, the view from here, it's clear, no more talk, anywhere, ghost, can't tell me, i will be your girlfriend, wearchest, st. swithin's day, not so manic now, stars - motiv 8 mix, not so manic now - way out west mix, stars - way out west mix.

the smashing pumpkins - adore

this one's been out for a while, but i wasn't intrigued by what i'd heard on the radio - plus, i've never been a very big fan of the band. that is, until i heard "ava adore" which is the tune that made me purchase their latest effort. this isn't the kind of music that you'd want to play in your car while on a long saturday afternoon drive. well, track 10 maybe. but the rest is perfect for every stage of night. it is one of the best musical investments i've made in a long time. if you liked melon collie and the infinite sadness, you'll probably enjoy this one as much if not more. even "perfect" has grown on me. i adore adore.

tracks: to sheila, ava adore, perfect, daphne descends, once upon a time, tear, crestfallen, apples and oranjes, pug, the tale of dusty and pistol pete, annie dog, shame, behold the nightmare, for martha, blank page.
