Hong-do
This is the most beautiful of the islands west of Mokp'o. It rises precipitously from the sea and is bounded by sheer cliffs, bizarre rock romations, and wooded hillsides cut by steep ravines. The island rises straight out of the exceedingly clear water to a heaight of 368 meters. Hong-do ("Red Island") has a definite reddish coloration in much of its exposed rock. there is no coastal plain. There are also many islets whick surround the main island, and susets are spectacular on clear days. It is only some six km long. the island is designated as a nature reserve.
