熊谷登喜夫は、1947年、宮城県は仙台に生まれました。1966年から4年間文化服装学院に学んだ後遠藤賞を受け、そのご褒美として1970年に渡仏します。はじめはフランス・イタリア（FIORUCCI, RODIER, BINI, YVE SAINT LAURENTなど）でフリーランスのデザイナーとして活躍していました。
そして1981年、フランスにTOKIO KUMAGAIの靴のお店を出します。その頃の雑誌には、有名なモデル達がわざわざフランスに行ってTOKIOの靴を買ってくる・・ということが載っていたように記憶しています。彼の靴は、その頃の私にとってあこがれの架空の靴でした。
Tokio Kumagai was born in 1947 in Sendai, a northern city of Japan. He studied fashion design at Bunka Fashion College from 1966 to 1970 in Tokyo. Graduated with the Endo Award, he went over to France as a reward. His career as a freelance fashion designer started in France and Italy. In 1981, he opened his shoe shop called TOKIO KUMAGAI in Paris. I remember some articles of Japanese fasion magazines of the day. They said, "(Japanese) famous fashion models go over to France in order to purchase TOKIO KUMAGAI's shoes." His shoes were my longings at that time.
日本に上陸したのは、1983年11月のこと。それから何年か後になって、私は初めてTOKIOの靴に出会います。最初は高いからと言ってなかなか手が出せなかったんですが、履いてみたら、もう虜でした。。 お店に行くたびにわくわくしながら試着をし、私の愚足にもぴったり合ってきれいに見せてくれるTOKIOの靴。彼が亡くなるまで私はその靴達にすっかり魅了されてしまいました。亡くなったのは1987年。エイズだったそうです。その後、弟子である松島正樹らが会社を継いでがんばっていましたが、残念ながら2年で会社は終わってしまったようです。
In November 1983, finally, Tokio Kumagai opened his shoe shops in his home, Japan. A few years later, I found his shoe shop in Nagoya, and that was the first time to see his shoes. Every his pair was fully attention-getter! They were expensive but so attractive... His shoes fitted me nicely and my feet looked nice with his shoes on. And they were comfortable. I couldn't get away from them since then. But my obsession with Tokio's brilliant shoes ended abruptly. Tokio Kumagai died of AIDS in 1987. After that, Tokio's disciple Masaki Matsushima and his colleagues continued to run TOKIO KUMAGAI Company, but they closed their business after 2 years from Tokio's death.
