Friar John works for Friar Laurence. He is asked to deliver
the message to Romeo regarding Juliet's counterfeit death. Friar John goes to deliver the
message, but is too late. By the time he gets to Romeo, Bathazar has already informed
Romeo of Juliet's death. This is another of the fatal events that works against the young
lovers.
NOTE: In the modern film version, it is a UPS-like delivery service that fails to deliver the message in time. Friar John is seen in the background of a few shots, and is used as a hostage when Romeo reenters Verona and races from the police into the church where Juliet lies "dead".
