Lady Montague's nephew, Benvolio is the cousin of Romeo
and friend to Mercutio. He tries to avoid quarrels, even with the ill-tempered Tybalt. He
is, however, not afraid to fight when necessary. He is honest, and both Lord Montague and
the Prince rely on him for the truth throughout the play. His account of the deaths of
Mercutio and Tybalt helps save Romeo from execution.
