Reading Vocabulary Strategy

Overview

Children practise and predict story vocabulary.

Objective

Children will predict words which might appear in a story and learn new story vocabulary.

Resources

Unfamiliar story or factual book at grade reading level

Activities and Procedures

Show the cover of the book, read the title, and brainstorm with students a list of words which they think might appear in the story. Print the words on chart paper, overhead or blackboard. Then read part of the story and stop. Check the list for any words heard and circle those words. Predict any new words that might appear. Read further and stop. Circle words and predict again. Continue until the story is completely read.

Tying It All Together

Discuss the results. Ask, "Why did you think this word would appear?". "How accurate were our guesses?" This could also be done with silent reading of a passage, with small groups or individually.
