If one can't recognize the injustices that the Old Confederate South had bestowed on slaves, then one is truly blinded by ignorance. Injustices continued AFTER the Civil War in the form of Jim Crow laws, lynchings, church burnings, terrorist attacks, intimidation, etc.
When the time finally came to clear away such injustices, supporters of the Old Confederate RESISTED! They bombed churches; stood in doorways to block children from gaining access to quality education; unleashed dogs unto crowds who protested to be treated as human beings; the list can go on...
They didn't (and still don't til' this day) believe that every citizens in American ought to have Civil Rights. Instead, they continue to believe that they're entitled to deny anyone they who do not LOOK like themselves equality of rights. From their view point, they believe that the U.S. Constitution was not intended to guarantee freedom for everyone.
Anyone can see til' this day, the supporters of the confederate refuses to give up the Civil War fight. When you get the opportunity, please read through the Southern Manifesto which was drafted by Strom Thurmond in 1956. In it, he declares
"We pledge ourselves to use all lawful means to bring about a reversal of this decision which is contrary to the Constitution and to prevent the use of force in its implementation."
Believe it or not, Strom Thurmond has served for the longest term in U.S. Senate for S. Carolina. So far, he has NOT apologize to the citizens he has offended throughout his lifetime. Instead, he has become a hero to conservatives and others who have absouletly no social consciencious. These are the people who wish to carry on the old southern tradition and the confederate flag is their emblem. I say, let's burn the damn thing! Let's burn it out of America's heart! It's contradictory to what America REALLY stands for -- equality.
