FIRST CIRCULAR LETTER (MAY 2008)

To:  Potential Contributors to a third volume on the Hundred Years War
From:  L. J. Andrew Villalon and Donald J. Kagay
Date:

Dear Friends and Colleagues:

I have just returned from the Medieval Congress at Kalamazoo where Don and I spoke to Julian Deahl, the acquisitions editor for Brill.

Since the second volume of our Hundred Years War collection is now complete and should be appearing in or around August, we wanted to know if Brill was interested in our doing a third volume.  I asked Julian that question and his answer was a "yes" depending (as always) upon our ability to find a sufficient number of good articles.

At one time or another, I have talked with all of you about the possibility of contributing to the collection.   So I am writing to you first to find out which of you may still be interested.  If you are, you will obviously have first crack at providing an article.

The following are the articles that you suggested to me or that I suggested to you.  (In some cases, I have put a working title onto what we talked about.  Feel free to change it!)

Heather Arden, "Christine de Pizan's View of the Hundred Years War"

Sergio Boffa, "The Duchy of Brabant in the Hundred Years War (Part II):  the Birth of Burgundian Hegemony in the Low Countries"

Paul Chevedden, "The Twilight of the Trebuchet"

David A. Cohen, "The King as his own War Historian:  Pere III's Chronicle on the War of the Two Pedros"

Mark DePuy, "Hospitalers in the Hundred Years War"

Judy Ford, “The Influence of the War on the Development of English

David Green, “After Bretigny:  English Foreign and Colonial Policy in the 1360s

Bert Hall, “Battlefield Artillery and French Victory in the Hundred Years War”

David Hoornstra, “Bouciquaut and the Wheel of Fortune

Donald Kagay, "War and the Spanish Clergy"

Isabelle Kinnard, “The Trial of Joan of Arc

Diane Martin, “The Hollands:  A Noble Family in the Hundred Years War”

Sean McGlynn, “Chevauchee or Ravaging?

Russell Mitchell, “New Armor Types and the Rise of New Sword Fighting Techniques in the Hundred Years War”

James Murray, “Bruges in the Hundred Years War

Jane Marie Pinzino, "The Hundred Years War and the Mendicant Orders"

Douglas Sterling, “Medieval Treatment of the Hundred Years War at Sea:  Jean Froissart on Naval Conflict

Kenneth Thompson, "Chaucer's Experience of War

L. J. Andrew Villalon, "The Wages of Waging War:  Sir Hugh Calveley and the Military Foundations of a Fourteenth Century Fortune"

We have several other people who have recently expressed interest or from whom we intend to solicit a contribution.  Consequently, we would very much appreciate hearing from all of you as soon as possible, telling us whether you are or are not still interested in contributing an article to this latest volume of the collection.  In this way, we shall be able to establish a preliminary contributors list to show Brill and the medieval military series editor, Kelly DeVries.

If at all possible, we would like to see an editable draft by sometime in the fall, though this is by no means an inflexible deadline.  If you are interested, but it would take you somewhat longer, please let us know that fact.

Hope to see most of you on board.

 Best,

Andrew Villalon
